LETTERS FROM YOU!
We Older Singers... What Dreams Should We Pursue?
I enjoy hearing from readers of this newsletter. In fact, it is often due to hearing from you that I write about many of the issues found in this Newsletter and on the Singing Tips Web Site.
This week, there were two e-mails that particularly caught my attention. I asked both writers for permission to share their comments and questions with you. Thank you to both Jim and Ben for sharing your singing lives!
On the right, in MAIL BOX! you will see a comment from Jim Duchesneau about some very helpful exercises that have done his voice a lot of good. A highly sought-after singer, Jim is traveling and performing many concerts these days. So his comment has true practical value. Please read his e-mail on the right. Click on the links in the text to learn more and to test out the exercises.
And singer, Ben Caroccio, (See the Spotlight section below) sent me a question about a serious issue that many of us face as older singers. He is talking about the stresses we face in preparing for a competition:
"Judging (auditions), as you know can be very preferential and
subjective. 'Daring to try, to do it or die - I've gotta be me.' Music
is what I am all about. If I make it to the Simon (Cowell) audition, I'm
thinking, I am 62 - I look young for my age, but the stress
they put these people through..."
READ Ben's full question to me and my response.
who is auditioning for the Dallas X-Factor. In his e-mail to me he wrote:
"The Local FOX news channel has put out a "Local audition" for those in Houston. If you win this, they will provide free hotel accommodations and give you a free pass
- no waiting in line to audition before the Dallas X-Factor audition
producers and judges like Simon Cowell, etc. - on July, 25-26th." See Ben's audition video.

Dear Barbara,
I had a voice lesson with you in Montreal back in early February.
I had been having difficulties with the quality of
my voice for some time. You showed me some new exercises which were done at a simple speaking level using the word "NO" (or Noo)
I have been doing these exercises whenever I'm in the car on my way to a concert.
I will often do them for
at least an hour both on my way to a concert and then another hour following the concert. I have noticed in 3 months a significant difference in the quality of my voice.
I feel like the exercise has helped heal and stabilize something in my vocal chords. As a result I have recently suggested to 3 singers I know that they give you a call to learn how to do these new vocal warm-ups. I so appreciate your constantly growing and innovative approaches to vocal mastery.
Thanks a million.
Jim Duchesneau
